The first session in WTW's EXpresso Moments series explored emerging trends in psychosocial wellbeing. Our speakers shared insights and discussed the latest thinking on psychosocial hazards and risks, legislative reforms, how employers are adapting to changes, and strategies for creating a positive employee experience.

We also heard from employers on the psychosocial risks that are top of mind for their employees.

Key highlights

  • Psychosocial risks, which can cause psychological or physical harm, are a growing concern for many Australian employers, with issues such as employee burnout and underperformance top of mind.
  • Recent and upcoming legislative reforms are being used as a lever to drive proactive and preventative approaches to workplace psychological safety.
  • Changes to the Sex Discrimination Act in Australia has created a positive duty for employers to eliminate sexual harassment and other forms of unlawful conduct from their workplace.
  • Intersectionality – the idea that people's lives are shaped by their identities and relationships – is an emerging theme in understanding and managing psychosocial risks. This can influence exposure to discrimination and negative experiences in the workplace.
  • The right to disconnect from work outside of ordinary working hours, is an important aspect of managing psychosocial risk, soon to be enforced by new legislation.
  • Employers are expanding their wellbeing mandates to incorporate psychosocial wellbeing. This includes enhancing leadership understanding, plugging competency gaps, leveraging diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies, and adapting policies and processes to be more people-centred and trauma-informed.
