The huge workplace changes wrought by COVID-19 have shown that fragmented programs that act as band aids for short-term concerns cannot sufficiently address the changing needs and demographics of today’s employees. A proactive and holistic approach to strengthening health and wellbeing at the core of the organisation is required to produce a positive business impact and result in an enhanced ability to achieve better financial performance than peers.

The Willis Towers Watson Wellbeing Diagnostic Survey aimed to better understand organisations’ approaches to wellbeing in the workplace, benchmarking wellbeing programs and priorities of peer organisations throughout the Asia Pacific region. It sought to identify specific workforce health and wellbeing risks and discover roadblocks in the way of creating an effective and engaging wellbeing strategy.

Some of the key results for Australia and New Zealand included:

  • A significant majority of employers plan to use their wellbeing program as a differentiator in the next three years, compared to only 10% who are doing so today.
  • Almost nine out of 10 employers agree that their senior leadership is genuinely interested in the health and wellbeing of employees and their families, are taking steps to reshape their work environment and offering flexibility that enables employees to manage other commitments.
  • Stress and mental health were identified as the top two workforce issues, with clear impacts from the pandemic and economic recession.
